Fwd: Meet the New CVA Suspension

When we set out to create our own unique suspension platform, our goal was to build bikes that would be efficient and fully active all the time. Our Constant Varying Arc linkage system has been refined in the new JET and RIP and manages chain growth and pedaling forces regardless of chainring size, a limitation seen on many other systems. Pedaling forces act on the linkages like opening scissors, trying to move them in opposite directions. Chain tension pulls the lower linkage downward negating pedal squat and bob, while the upper linkage tends upward and remains free to react to impact forces. What you get is controlled traction for when you're trying to pick your way through an uphill minefield, bombing to the bottom and just savoring some sweet singletrack.

We wanted to make sure that the changes we made to CVA on the new JET and RIP improved the performance of the bikes from their predecessors. To do this we enlisted the help of Niner racer Alex Petitdemange who started testing samples of the new JET and RIP designs last fall on the trails in Sedona, Arizona where he lives and trains.

Alex provided our product team with valuable feedback in dialing in the new bikes and CVA enhancements. Alex described evaluating the JET, "I spent about two months straight last fall on the JET, to get really used to it." Suspension tuning was key, "With the updated 120mm travel and leverage ratio, this bike feels really fast, yet very plush. The CVA suspension is as efficient as ever, and I never feel like I need to use the 'pro pedal'. For most everyday riding, this bike does it all. It feels like more travel. This is my go-to bike for everyday riding in Sedona."

The RIP went through similar paces during testing, and Alex has already raced the new production bike. "I've been racing it since May, and the bike has been a perfect match for the enduro events. The CVA is updated, and the pedaling performance is super efficient. It allows me to save energy on the climbs, then have a long-travel bike for the technical downhills. The cornering grip and the lateral stiffness are amplified, so it's even more efficient on the downhills."

Alex put the RIP to its toughest challenge yet in early July. "I recently raced the first Trans BC Enduro, a six-day race in the heart of British Columbia. The trails were steep, rooty, rocky, and wet from four days of rain. These were the most extreme conditions in which I've tested the new RIP."

As one might expect, there was plenty of uphill, "There was a lot of climbing with alternating singletrack and roads. I was playing with the climb position on my shock to get the most efficiency of the redesigned CVA. It allowed me to save energy and get to the top of the hills fresh all week."

The courses in BC can tax the most capable bikes and riders but this is where the RIP really shined according to Alex, "Going down, the bike felt like it was in its element. The roots and the rock were very slick, but this bike has so much grip that it was never an issue, and I felt comfortable pushing it. The way the pilot is balanced on this bike makes it really stable, and it's easy to stay centered to attack those technical trails."

Cycling probably isn't what first comes to mind for most people when they think about Alaska, but Greg Matyas at Speedway Cycles in Anchorage is trying to change all that. The biggest city in Alaska, Anchorage is home to roughly 400,000 people and has built up a reputation as a great Nordic ski town.

But as bike technology has evolved over the years, things have started changing around Anchorage. It should come as no surprise that fatbikes are popular in the area, but this has even challenged the more typical ski town persona and cast light on two-wheeled recreation as a new way to enjoy the beauty in Alaska. Just a note, Greg is an avid winter biker himself having raced the Iditarod Trail Invitational and even finished third in 2011!

In spite of winter riding grabbing the early attention, Greg notes things are changing and there's some great summertime mountain biking right in town. As a board member of the local Singletrack Advocates he's also working to get more trails built both around Anchorage and into the Chugach area too.

Greg says that while they're trying to add variety to their trail inventory, most of the trails aren't super technical yet and short-to-mid travel mountain bikes like the RKT and JET are great choices. And Greg heeds his own advice, having ridden the JET as his daily driver for the last three years.

But he'll admit that something like the new, longer travel RIP can be a great quiver builder if heading outside the metro area. The bucket list riding over in the Yukon would warrant a bigger bike, says Greg, and he recently raced the Trans BC Enduro where he might really have enjoyed the longer travel. He did get the chance to check out Alex Petitdemange's new RIP at the event, but he'll have to wait until next year if he wants to do the race on one of his own.

Greg and his team at Speedway Cycles are an amazing resource in the Anchorage cycling community. If you're ever looking to head up for an unforgettable northern adventure, then do yourself a favor and stop by the shop for the best local advice.

Niner employees are passionate riders who believe that time spent on the trails with friends is as important as time spent in the office. Scraped knees, riding tales, and camp fire smell in our jackets remind us of our primary goal - building beautiful, dependable bikes that you will enjoy as much as we do.
