Fwd: November Niner News - RDO Carbon Compaction

CARBON COMPACTION

Beauty is more than skin deep. In the case of RDO Carbon Compaction, the beauty and technology is inside the Niner frame.

Niner's RDO Carbon Compaction System utilizes rigid internal molds within the frame. The result is a tighter, more consistent compaction of the carbon layers, yielding increased precision in wall thickness and significantly reduced resin pooling in the final product. What this means is a better tuned frame, increased strength and durability along with the weight reduction. It's this type of construction that sets Niner apart from the field.

Recently, Jeff Stewart, a retailer of ours, got a hold of our Niner RLT 9 and BSB 9 RDO, ripping them around the Utah backcountry all summer long. His conclusion? The RLT 9 is "equally awesome at driving hard over the flats and descending" and called the 'cross ready BSB 9 RDO, "perfect."

After getting some miles on the RLT 9, Jeff noted that the relaxed geometry makes it ideal for taking the road less traveled, as well as the occasional 'cross race. The RLT has a tire clearance of up to 45mm - this is truly a bike that can dirty when the opportunity arises, but cleans-up and performs on the road as well.

When he threw a leg over the BSB 9 RDO, Jeff didn't miss the fact that the cyclocross specific geometry inspired confidence. The BSB's angles, combined with the 15mm thru-axle, kept the bike feeling snappy and "didn't infringe on the frame's sprinting and climbing capabilities." So when you need the hole shot, ripping the tight line through a turn, or snatching that dollar bill (or cold beverage) from a heckling fan, the BSB's agile geometry can make it happen. So, with 'cross in full effect, the Niner BSB 9 RDO is "the no-brainer choice" for those toeing the line, whether it's at your local race or a World Cup event.

So what's your weapon of choice? The RLT 9 is your double duty rig - jumping over a barrier or continuing your ride when the pavement ends and the gravel begins. The BSB 9 RDO is a full-fledged cyclocross bike and the choice for CLIF Bar Team, which has been garnering solid results this season.

THE CLIF BAR CYCLOCROSS TEAM

Niner is proud to sponsor the CLIF Bar Cyclocross team that includes Ben Sonntag, Brady Kappius, and Troy Wells.

Ben continues to earn points this season, improving his call-up position for starting spots. Regardless of where he's been positioned on the starting grid, Ben has shown he can move through the field on the BSB 9 RDO saying, "It handles fantastic, it's stiff, light and looks sharp - super sharp."

In 2015 Ben's starting spot will improve, so look for him to be on the podium very soon.

Brady has been a member of the CLIF Bar Cyclocross team for years and is the complete package. This year he's raced closer to home in Colorado as he took a more involved position with Kappius Components. However, he is readying to expand his racing campaign very soon. After the Jingle Cross races his schedule is designed to bring him to good form for 'cross nationals

"I'm potentially off to North Carolina for a couple of UCI races in December. Then it's just a matter of staying focused and fit through the holidays and prepping for nationals in Austin."

Troy is the seasoned veteran of the group. He's a national champion and knows what it takes to stand on the top step of the podium. Like his teammates, Troy gives top marks for the BSB 9 RDO.

"I've really been enjoying the BSB 9 RDO. It has definitely exceeded my expectations. It has great geometry and handles like a dream. It is very responsive out of corner and I believe it's a perfect race machine. We always have fans asking about the bike and it is great when you believe in the bike - it makes it very easy to promote.

After a weekend of racing at Jingle Cross, Troy's big goal is a solid result at nationals.

With the season approaching the midway point, look for the CLIF Bar Cyclocross team to continue their winning ways.

TESTING STANDARDS

When you're out riding, the words "testing standards" probably aren't top of mind. If you're like us, it's more likely "how can I test myself on the home stretch?" You might want to pay attention to this, though: Niner's BSB and RLT bikes are tested for strength and breakage way above your average road cruiser.

At Niner we use a rigorous testing protocol that ensures the frame is going to survive whatever you throw at it. Whether that's taking the risk to bunnyhop a barrier on the BSB to get the upper hand on your opponent or taking that optional singletrack line on your RLT, rest assured that your Niner is up to the challenge. There are several ways we put the frames through the wringer.

Science, take it away:

One of the ways we test the frames of our drop bar bikes is placing a 70 kilogram weight on the seatpost, then with the rear axle secured, lifting the front end and dropping it repeatedly to check for cracking or catastrophic damage (that's engineering speak for breakage). Other methods include applying force to the pedal spindle and measuring frame deflection. Our favorite method of checking frame resilience is to secure the rear dropout and then flex the fork forward and back at over 600 Newtons of force. If there are any signs of damage we go back to the drawing board. These are just a few ways we ensure your ride is confidence inspiring, ready for action, and soundly crafted.

Put simply-imagine you're coming in hot to a barrier on your BSB or RLT. Maybe it was that extra beer you grabbed from a spectator that gave you the confidence to come in faster than most would recommend. Instead of gracefully leaping the obstacle, you hit it with the front wheel like that piece of wood owed you money. That's the type of stress we subject our bikes to, allowing you to pick yourself up, check your ego for damage, and remount, secure in the knowledge that the frame is fine.

So go ahead, ride that technical singletrack or try and bunnyhop that barrier. Put your mind at ease knowing your Niner frame is designed to be ridden hard and with passion.

NINER BIKES ANNUAL COMPANY TRIP

What started out as an idea to get our employees much needed R&R has turned into one of our favorite traditions here at Niner Bikes-our annual "Employee Camping Trip".

Every year we pick a destination designed to be a huge reminder of what brought us all to Niner to begin with, the simplicity of tires on ribbons of dirt carved into the hillside. It has been a challenge to find places to fit our ever growing company. What was five turned into 14 and has since turned into 33 happy dust covered faces.

This year's venue was the vast system of trails in Park City, Utah. With over 400 miles of mountain bike trails, this IMBA Gold Level Ride Center was surely the right fit with something to offer each of various skill levels of the riders here at Niner Bikes. After all, this is the one time a year we can get everyone together and shed our adopted identities of "Sales Rep", "Build Tech", "Engineer", and "Accountant" and rekindle our original identity of "Rider".

Our trips have occurred in various times of the year in pockets of guilt free time where we can toss our legs over our favorite Niner Bike without losing too much touch with our Dealers and Ninerds. This year we chose the small slice of time directly after the Interbike Trade Show in Vegas. With the entire Outdoor Dirt Demo fleet at our disposal it was a great time to get everyone familiar with each of our frame platforms. Although negotiating an employee's day-one favorite from their clutches for a new day-two experience was a bit challenging, we were all able to get some great time in throughout the three days of riding.

So the next time you see a Niner Employee at a Demo or Event you can rest assured that when they are talking about how one of our frames rips a corner or ascends with ease you know it's from experience.  As for the passion you see... well that's none of Niner's doing. That's part of their DNA. We simply "force" a reminder upon everyone once a year and we are hardly able to say Niner Bikes forced me to ride in Park City, Utah!

Niner employees are passionate riders who believe that time spent on the trails with friends is as important as time spent in the office. Scraped knees, riding tales and camp fire smell in our jackets remind us of our primary goal-building beautiful, dependable bikes that you will enjoy as much as we do.

Thank you, from the Niner Bikes Crew!
